Housing Insecurity and Schooling Options through McKinney-Vento Act

In accordance with the McKinney-Vento Act, updated March 9th, 2023

Are you experiencing housing insecurity or are currently homeless?

If your family is in a temporary or inadequate living situation due to loss of housing, your child might be eligible for certain educational rights and services.  If you believe your student may be eligible, please complete this residency questionnaire.    

Many different living situations can qualify a student for aid:

• In a house or apartment with more than one family due to loss of housing or economic hardship.

• With friends, family, or others because they are a runaway or an unaccompanied youth.

• In substandard housing (without electricity, water, heat, etc.).

• In a shelter (family, domestic violence, youth, transitional living program, etc.).

• In a motel, hotel, weekly rate housing.

• In an abandoned building, in a car, at a campground, or on the streets.

A student may:

• Receive a free, appropriate public education.

• Enroll in school immediately, even if lacking documents normally required for enrollment.

• Enroll in school and attend classes while the school gathers needed documents.

• Enroll in the local school; or continue attending their school of origin (the school they attended when permanently housed or the school in which they were last enrolled), if that is their preference.

* If the school district believes that the school selected is not in his/her best interest, then the district must provide the student with a written explanation of its position and inform the student of his/her right to appeal its decision.

• Receive transportation to and from the school of origin, if requested.

• Receive educational services comparable to those provided to other students, according to the students’ needs.

A student must be enrolled in school immediately, even without required documents such as:

• Proof of residency.

• Immunization records or other health records.

• School records.

• Legal guardianship papers
